Reading curve progress, what the percentage actually tells you
Where the progress number comes from, why the same 10% costs different amounts at different points, what each stage of the bar means, and what it hides.
Every Pump.fun coin shows a progress bar toward graduation. Straightforward to read at a glance, and it hides a few things that matter.
What the number counts
Tokens sold from the curve, as a share of the curve's allocation.
Not SOL collected, and that distinction is the source of most confusion. Progress moves when tokens leave the curve, and because price rises as they do, equal steps of progress cost very unequal amounts of SOL.
Going from 10% to 20% is cheap. Going from 80% to 90% costs several times as much, because the tokens in that band are priced far higher by the same formula. How the Pump.fun bonding curve works covers the shape.
What each stage tends to mean
Rough reading, from watching a lot of coins:

That fourth band is worth understanding, because it's where the arithmetic turns against you. Early buyers are sitting on large multiples and thinking about exits, while new buyers are looking at the most expensive tokens the curve will ever sell. Those 2 populations meeting is what a stall at 84% actually is.
What the bar doesn't show
Three things, and they're the ones that decide outcomes.
Who holds it. A coin at 60% with 1 wallet holding a third of the supply is in a far worse position than a coin at 30% spread across 400 addresses. Progress says nothing about concentration. Bubblemaps and holder analysis shows what does.
Whether it's still moving. A bar at 71% looks identical whether it got there 4 minutes ago or 3 weeks ago. Direction is invisible in a static number.
How it got there. Forty percent from 300 buyers reads completely differently from 40% from 6, and the bar renders both the same way.
Reading it properly
Check 3 things alongside the number, and it takes about a minute.
Look at the last hour of trades. Rising, flat, or nothing at all tells you the direction the bar can't.
Look at unique wallets over the coin's life. That separates broad interest from a handful of participants.
Then look at whether the bar has gone backwards. It can, and it does, since sells reduce progress exactly the way buys increase it. Can a coin lose graduation progress covers that mechanism, and curve progress went backwards covers diagnosing it on your own coin.
What it means as a creator
Mostly, don't optimise for it.
Pushing the bar is expensive at exactly the point where pushing feels urgent, and buying your own coin to move it shows up on your creator wallet forever while making your holder chart worse. You'd be spending heavily to damage the strongest signal your coin has.
More useful question: is anybody arriving? A coin at 22% with steady new wallets is healthier than one at 68% that hasn't traded since Tuesday, because the first has a mechanism for reaching 100% and the second doesn't. Reading a stalled launch covers the diagnosis.
What the bar is worth
Progress counts tokens sold, not SOL raised, so late percentage points cost far more than early ones. It can move backwards. And it says nothing about who holds the coin or whether anything is happening right now, which are the 2 questions that actually decide what comes next.

Not exactly. Progress tracks how much of the curve allocation has been bought, and because price rises along the curve, the second half costs considerably more SOL than the first.
It means buying happened. Whether it is happening now is a separate question, and the more useful one.
